The Ice Dragon - A cautionary tale

Deep down inside a cavern where the sun has never shone
Neath mountain, rock, and water, lives a Dragon all alone

No fire dwells in his belly inside him is only ice
The coldness coming off him is his only living vice

A length of time uncertain passed since he last fell asleep
And cursed will be the fool that wakes him from his slumber deep

It’s not that he is evil or that waking makes him mad
More, once he wakes his ice will spread until the whole world’s clad

He knows of no control for this it’s simply been his way
When ere he wakes a sudden frost consumes the dawning day

His yawning breath chills down the wind to temperatures low
The lonely sigh his voice emits brings on the falling snow

On stretching out his wings he pushes ice across the globe
In glacial form it shapes the land and shrouds it like a robe

What once was terra firma then becomes a white façade
With twinkling points on slippery slopes a landscape frozen hard

And once this new environment has taken on his chill
He lies himself down once again, then settles, and is still

Returning back to sleep night falls across the hills and fens
The earth is cleansed and slowly starts to warm itself again

And you who now are wondering what fool would wake this beast
Should know that it is all mankind! We think of Earth the least

Our selfish wasting may seem like it garners no comeback
But think again as you set global warming on its track

The scientists may say they know an ice age is ahead
But we know that what brings this ice is sleeping in his bed

The energy we waste adds up and though there seems no cost
It simply brings the day around when our time will be lost

For once the world is warmed enough to pierce his frozen dreams
The Dragon wakes and yawns again returning cold extremes

So think when you turn up the heat upon a frosty dawn
That rumble in the pipes you hear may be the Dragons yawn
