After years (!) of writing, editing, and quiet reflection, I’ve started organising my WIP dragon poetry collection into a more intentional structure.
It’s currently divided into four thematic quadrants, where each one reflects a different emotional landscape or creative focus.
Tentative Quadrants:
- Teenage Foundation: Early poems from my formative years, which actually fell into the more traditional classical fantasy writing themes.
- Seasonal & Nature: Pieces inspired by the changing seasons, or the natural world’s power.
- Personal Mythos: Poems that explore identity, memory, and storytelling to make sense of change.
- Romance & Love: Reflections on connection, longing, and composting past encounters that weren’t meant to be.
Each quadrant holds approximately ten poems, that’s still evolving as I continue to write and revise.
I took a long time to think about what the fourth quadrant could look like. I guess I’m aiming for something more layered and archetypal, where it’s more about symbolic love with its charm and mystery versus a more normal type of romance. I’m aiming for more mythic cartography than romantic autobiography.
I’ll share more soon as the collection takes shape.
For now, this structure feels like a meaningful way to capture the different phases of my creative journey.
Thanks for reading,
Jess
