2 Dragon Sketches

A midnight / blue sun dragon sketch based on Malaysian temple decor, and an older sketch based on the Ljubljana dragon sculpture.

The last time I did a dragon sketch was in May (City Dragon Sketches).

I recently attempted to do a “dragon incense” sketch.

It was a bit more complicated than I thought in terms of body composition, and since I’d used an OHTO ballpoint pen straight, it couldn’t be fixed.

I like using a pen to sketch when I haven’t sketched something in a while, as it feels more free flowing than using a pencil and making more frequent erasure marks as I get the outline right.

Midnight / Blue Sun Dragon Sketch

Using a nice ornate golden dragon carving in Malaysian temple decor (by vitalina) as the reference pic, I sketched this after abandoning the incense sketch.

Colours were added via a vector app’s preset colour filters.

I’m not sure how the sun ended up as almost fully blue, but I liked the watery depth undertone of it (together with the mermaid-adjacent shimmer on the dragon scales) so I left it at that.

Another Older Sketch (based on Ljubljana dragon)

This was completed in early 2024, and I forgot to add it here onto Dragonsinn.

Based off a photo of the Ljubljana dragon sculpture by Oscar Ruiz, and done as part of a friend’s themed calendar for the year.

It ended up looking a bit like a gargoyle, which I was okay with.

The mouth and wing portions were fun to neatly shade in.

Other Ideas

On the back burner are 1-2 more micro-app ideas I had to accompany the Dragon Affirmations first micro-app.

I may sketch 1-3 pieces for the next micro-app if I can think of how to integrate it. Also 1-2 ideas for a Christmas postcard design.

On a non-sketching note, I should be ready to start publishing some of the dragon poetry collection pieces on the website soon.

I’ll probably do it in stages instead of doing everything (posting online; formatting eBook; narrating on YouTube) at the same time.
